question: why did macchin quit?

With regards to Macchin - I read somewhere that because he had some major injury to his hand (or wrist?) sometime in october-ish, he re-evaluated what he wanted to do with his life and well... it seemed it wasn't to continue with Back-on as the announcement was made not long after that.
poor Macchin, I would be so disappointed to left a band like that
