Perhaps you can consider looking into GIMP if you have the time, Edward?
I've heard good things about it.
I have just found the best application ever to tidy up my desktop icons!
It's called Fences and in my humble opinion is the MUST HAVE of the year (I feel like a marketing person now...)! You can group your icons into 'groups' (it can do that automatically for you) and if you double click on the desktop, it hides those 'fences/groups' and you can see your desktop wallpaper without distraction.
If you would prefer to keep some key icons on the desktop, just change the settings for the 'fence' to exclude it from 'hide', and voila!
This is what my desktop now looks like (a new wallpaper is due as is more customisation of those fences)
