In terms of recording software, I don't know what people are using (perhaps everyone could share?
 ) but I do know of Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) which is free.

But, I guess I should say this now; I can't get a microphone thingy because it wouldn't really serve much of a purpose after the competition. My dad is kinda crazy about the whole spending money thing. =[ Sorry
