One Piece new OP “Hands Up!” written and composed by BACK-ON!

Some fans may be familiar with the popular Japanese anime TV series One Piece, and I am very happy to announce – with thanks to MONSTERSNITE for the news – that the 16th opening theme called “Hands Up!” was written and composed by BACK-ON!

The band has also been credited on the official One Piece website and the new OP aired for the first time today (April 14th 2013) as part of episode 591 :)

The lyrics are also typically uplifting - encouraging the listener to look up, step up, leap over the waves and head to the future.

BACK-ON featuring on TRF (Tetsuya Komuro Rave Factory) 20th anniversary tribute album with “Where to begin”!

BACK-ON have been busy with their live performances recently, but they have joined forces with some big names in the music industry to record a tribute album for TRF (Tetsuya Komuro Rave Factory) in celebration of the group’s 20th anniversary!

For those who may not be familiar with TRF, they are a 5-member chart-topping dance music group that debuted in 1992. The group have released more than 30 singles and 10 albums over their 20 year (and counting) career and were one of the pioneers of having English lyrics in their songs.

Group members include rapper DJ Koo, lead vocalist Yu-ki, and dancers Chiharu, Etsu, and Sam (Wikipedia) and they have all been with TRF from the very beginning.

It is difficult to fully portray how famous they are (the reaction in this video might help!) so I highly recommend taking a look at J!-ENT’s interview with the group in 2007, when they released their 15th anniversary album, as it makes for very interesting reading given their long and impressive history.

So the album TRF Tribute Album Best, which is due out next week on March 13th 2013, will be a 27-track 2-disc mega compilation of TRF songs, each recorded by a different artist, although some chose to do the same songs (“EZ Do Dance” was a popular choice!). We have included the track list of names/songs below and it really is worth taking a look :

As we highlighted above, BACK-ON decided to cover ”Where to begin“, which was the title track of TRF‘s 35th single that reached no. 18 back in 2006. It is an upbeat dance track with some great dance moves if you watch the original MV. It is probably best to watch it first (if you don’t already know the song) and *then* listen to the 44-second preview clip on the official Tribute site or below. There is a second preview clip (from the start of the song) available from Joshinweb as well!

I only wish the clips were longer! TEEDA‘s rap blends in very smoothly to the song and KENJI03 powers through the high notes in the chorus while guitar riffs play in the background. It’s a unique BACK-ON take and I am really looking forward to listening to the song in full. Preview clips by other artists are also available on both sites and I am personally impressed by the dubstep that appears to be in TVXQ‘s cover of survival dAnce 〜no no cry more〜.

Happy New Year to you all for 2013!

Sorry it’s been a while since we have updated the site. Fans will probably know that – since the last update – KENJI03 became a father in July 2012 to a lovely baby boy (weighing 2,952 grams or 6.5 lbs) and BACK-ON have continued to be very busy with their live schedule.

They have also recently revamped their official HP http://www.back-on.com - by changing the main photo and rearranging the content below the logo and navigation. As part of the revamp, they are now able to showcase 5 clips of their most well-known songs including: flower, with you, Ice Cream, Tomorrow never knows and Chain.

In addition to this, the band also released 38 second teaser for their new song 愛言葉～この世界の中で君と出会えたキセキ～ (Ai kotoba ～ kono sekai no naka de kimi to deae ta kiseki ～) which translates into Words of Love ~ The miracle of meeting you in this world.

It’s a beautiful title and definitely takes the top prize for being the longest one by BACK-ON. I do like what seems to be the chorus which has the piano and strings playing in the background as KENJI03 and TEEDA sing and rap; KENJI03 also sings “I love you” in Japanese, English and Mandarin Chinese (我愛你 – wo ai ni) in one sentence.

The Review:

2. Highway Dancer
The song starts off “live.” Kenji seems to be challenging himself to singing in a high note. I like the random heavy autotune. Just don’t overuse it, TEEDA! Ahahaha. The song is nice and I like it’s more of Kenji or more like… I like Kenji is getting more singing. Great song! Reminds me little of Flyaway single.

4. Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!
Oh snap. I wasn’t expecting the beginning to sound like this from BACK-ON. This sounds more of a dance song than a rock song. I see Kenji is singing in English. Practice, Mr.! I’m not sure what it is about this song, but it’s really catchy. Especially the “Nananana” and the delay “Nanana” part.

It could be just me, but I’m aware Kenji is a 2NE1 fan and this song actually reminds me a little of 2NE1 and BIG BANG. Note, I’m not a K-pop fan, but have been listening to BIG BANG before the k-pop hype.

5. come on & Let’s go feat.Emyli,kailis from OVER DOSE(Taiwan)
Now we’re going to the hardcore rap/Hip-hop stuff. Kenji is finally rapping… How long has it been since he rapped? Since that one song with his brother? Anyway, TEEDA’s rapping is pretty awesome and his English is really good.

The feature artists. Don’t get me wrong about the previous feature females (I’m a fan of mini), but I’m so glad they got a female who reaches my expectations. Kailis is awesome as well. I would like to check out their works, seeing I don’t have much Taiwanese artists on my list. Thanks Kenji for picking these artists up!

6. HOME
Back to their current style. This is one of their usual slow songs. The title is pretty obvious what the song is about. Makes me wonder if this is for the future family of Kenji’s. The song is pretty good for a slow song as I’m not big on ballads or any slow song type.

7. Word play
Starts off as we’re listening to the radio. This song reminds me of their random songs like Fwreedom. I didn’t like it as much as I did with the other songs unfortunately. Nothing special about it as it’s genetic..

8. WE CAN’T STOP
Finally we’re getting some darker songs. This one is pretty good at the beginning. (Something about me liking the beginning parts of this album lol) It’s not as hardcore as ‘New World’ but the chorus is awesome. It’s time to go! Kenji needs to start using his longer notes more often.

9. フタリダイアリー
Starts off slow and then fast. Some piano here and there. Sounds like a normal Japanese rock song you here today, so there isn’t much I can say about this song.

10. IT’S NOT OVER
Summer song? Sounds like something you can listen to while going to a party on a beach. It’s definitely not over, we’re just starting the summer. I like the part where Kenji is about to cuss, but the beep covered it. Ahahaha

11. Selfish
I know I’m skipping the single track songs, but to note about this song: on the single, it’s connected to ‘Connectus’ but now that it has it’s own track, the song is a little different from the original.

12. Mr Yesterday
Last song, why do I have a feeling TEEDA created this title? Another… err serious song? Similar to ‘HOME.’ It’s a great song to end the album or even at a live. I wonder when BACK-ON will play at a bigger stage, seeing they’ve played parts of the world already.

Overall: 8/10

The album is good enough to be on the Oricon charts. I hope it does because I would like to see another ‘Flyaway’ ranking. I’m not sure if they’re competing with any other big stars but anyway… The album is great, although I still wish they made more hardcore songs similar to ‘New World’ or ‘Grab.’ Doesn’t have to be always as I understand music style changes.

However, I would love to hear more songs like ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!’ and ‘come on & Let’s go’ as the two are my top favorite songs. So that’s my small review of the album! As the title says: “Good Job!!”

BACK-ON – フタリダイアリー (Futaridaiarī) Two-person Diary | Lyrics

フタリダイアリー (Futaridaiarī) Two-person Diary is a contemplative track from the second-half of BACK-ON‘s third album “Good Job!!“.

It initially distinguishes itself from the other tracks simply by being the only one with a Japanese title (in Katakana) and provides a nice gentle ‘pause’ between WE CAN’T STOP and IT’S NOT OVER with its lovely, mellow melody and lyrics reminiscing about the good times two people shared – the piano in particular adds a summery feel and I can imagine a PV (music video) shot in the sun.

And as before, sometimes we like to point out interesting things that we have spotted in the lyrics:

未来(あす) = usually pronounced mirai and means ‘future’ but in this instance asu (or ‘tomorrow’) is used instead

ケータイ = keitai = cellphone/mobile

メール = mēru = mail/e-mail

欠片 = kakera = fragments/broken pieces

度 = tabi = (no. of) times (the alternate pronunciation is do when it means ‘degrees’)

日 = hi = sun (can also mean ‘day (of the month)’ or ‘Sunday’ – also pronounced as nichi)

We have opted for WE CAN’T STOP as the third set of lyrics to be posted from BACK-ON‘s third album “Good Job!!” due to a special request from thekiller99 and the fact that it has one of the catchiest intros!

The 18-second guitar build up draws you in and is followed by the usual catchy KENJI03 chorus; it’s also impossible not to like TEEDA‘s rap parts. The song also marks a nice transition in the album as it changes from the rather cheeky and cheerful Word play and moves into traditional BACK-ON rap-rock territory.

As with the other lyrics, we have Uta-Net to thank for the original Kanji, and for the first time ever, we have included an LRC version of a song for those who love to sing-a-long to BACK-ON.

Word play is one track that very much surprised me from BACK-ON‘s third album “Good Job!!” – the preview clip really did not do it justice – as it’s a summer track that reminds me of bands from the 60s (think Beach Boys and Cliff Richard and the Shadows), very tongue-in-cheek and carefree – I especially love the verses and the raps – and the first 10 seconds with the ‘radio’ voice over adds a twist, making it an even better road-trip song.

Seriously – who wouldn’t want to clap their hands and say oh! oh! oh! with BACK-ON?

BACK-ON launched their third album Good Job!! today which features an eclectic mix of songs – including Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! – brilliant electro-pop track which appears to have been inspired a little by Like a G6 by Fast East Movement.

(May 30th 2012), as this is definitely one of BACK-ON‘s best songs (imho) in that not only does it deliver a message of hope, inspiration and belief, one that we can ALL relate and sing-along to, but does so as part of a tune that, to me at least, is as groundbreaking and captivating as Chain.

BACK-ON‘s TEEDA and KENJI03 joined BayFM‘s さな(Sana) on her radio show ON8 yesterday and MONSTERSNITE has very kindly uploaded it onto Youtube for everyone to listen to as well!

The pair are their usual charming selves (I think there’s even a gift!) and Sana likes calling them ‘sempai’, but quite importantly, this is probably the first time that come on & Let’s go feat. Emyli, KALIS from OverDose (Taiwan) has received radio airplay and we get to hear it in FULL!

It is definitely a fantastic collaboration featuring KENJI03 + TEEDA + Emyli + KALIS rapping and singing in no less than three different languages (English, Japanese and Mandarin) – it is THE tune of the month for me!

I reckon it will be impossible for anyone not to like this song and it would be great to know your thoughts! :D With lyrics like ‘turn up the volume on the 50-pound boom box‘ and mentions of ‘Wu-Tang‘ (TEEDA) and ‘gotta aim sky high never settle for a lie‘ (Emyli), ’gotta be brave… 最真實的自我’ (my true self – KALIS) and a chorus with English and Japanese (sung predominantly by KENJI03) – English excerpts below:
